Leaving at First Light

On her last morning, Polly climbs to the watchtower one final time, and finds Berta already there, which is odd for a creature who claims to despise climbing. The marten shrugs. Somebody has to check that the sunrise is done properly, she says. They sit together on the old stones while the sky goes about its slow, spectacular business.

Op haar laatste ochtend klimt Polly een allerlaatste keer naar de wachttoren, en vindt daar Berta, wat vreemd is voor een dier dat beweert klimmen te verafschuwen. De marter haalt haar schouders op. Iemand moet controleren of de zonsopgang netjes wordt uitgevoerd, zegt ze. Ze zitten samen op de oude stenen terwijl de hemel zijn langzame, spectaculaire werk doet.

First light touches the tower, then walks down the wall, then spills across the rooftops, and for a few minutes the whole town glows rose and gold, as if the houses were lit from inside. The bells of the flock sound faintly from the high meadows. Down in the gorge, the river keeps its ancient loop, holding the town the way it has held it for a thousand years.

Het eerste licht raakt de toren, wandelt dan de muur af en stroomt over de daken, en een paar minuten lang gloeit de hele stad roze en goud, alsof de huizen van binnenuit verlicht worden. De belletjes van de kudde klinken zwak vanuit de hoge weiden. Beneden in de kloof houdt de rivier zijn eeuwenoude lus, en houdt de stad vast zoals hij haar al duizend jaar vasthoudt.

Berta does not do farewells, she announces, and then does one anyway, pressing a dried fig into Polly's wing with great firmness. For the road, she says. Towns like this one do not mind being left, she adds, because they know that leaving is the first half of coming back. Then she trots away down the wall, tail high, without looking around.

Berta doet niet aan afscheid, kondigt ze aan, en neemt er vervolgens toch een, door met grote vastberadenheid een gedroogde vijg in Polly's vleugel te drukken. Voor onderweg, zegt ze. Steden als deze vinden het niet erg om verlaten te worden, voegt ze eraan toe, want ze weten dat weggaan de eerste helft van terugkomen is. Dan draaft ze de muur af, staart omhoog, zonder om te kijken.

Polly lifts off from the tower and lets the river show her the way out, following the green water through the gorge until the pink town folds away behind the hills. The fig, she decides, will be for later, somewhere far from here, when she needs to taste a small pink town again.

Polly stijgt op van de toren en laat de rivier haar de weg naar buiten wijzen, en volgt het groene water door de kloof tot de roze stad achter de heuvels wegvouwt. De vijg, besluit ze, is voor later, ergens ver van hier, wanneer ze een klein roze stadje wil kunnen proeven.
