The Chair by the Fire

The guesthouse stood above the harbour, with its door on the sheltered side. On these islands, that is the side you put a door on. It was kept by a North Ronaldsay ewe, one of the shore sheep that eat seaweed. Polly stood in the hall. "Do you have any available rooms?"

Das Gästehaus stand über dem Hafen, mit der Tür auf der geschützten Seite. Auf diesen Inseln ist das die Seite, auf die man eine Tür setzt. Geführt wurde es von einem North-Ronaldsay-Schaf, einem der Strandschafe, die Seetang fressen. Polly stand in der Diele. "Haben Sie noch Zimmer frei?"

There were rooms. There usually are in September. Polly said, "I would like a quiet room, please." The ewe waited a moment before she answered. The back rooms face the yard and the front rooms face the water. The wind finds both. After two nights you stop hearing it.

Es gab Zimmer. Im September gibt es meistens welche. Polly sagte: "Ich hätte gern ein ruhiges Zimmer, bitte." Das Schaf wartete einen Moment, bevor es antwortete. Die hinteren Zimmer gehen zum Hof und die vorderen zum Wasser. Der Wind findet beide. Nach zwei Nächten hört man ihn nicht mehr.

"Could you assist me with my luggage, please?" The ewe carried the bag up and set it beside a chair by the fire. Its frame was driftwood, because no tree grows here. Its back was oat straw, coiled into a hood. A joiner in Kirkwall named David Kirkness made that design standard in the middle of the eighteen hundreds.

"Könnten Sie mir bitte mit meinem Gepäck helfen?" Das Schaf trug die Tasche hinauf und stellte sie neben einen Stuhl am Feuer. Sein Gestell war aus Treibholz, denn hier wächst kein Baum. Seine Lehne war aus Haferstroh, zu einer Haube gewunden. Ein Tischler aus Kirkwall namens David Kirkness machte diesen Entwurf Mitte des neunzehnten Jahrhunderts zum Standard.

"What time is check-out?" Polly asked. The ferry decides everything here. Then she sat in the chair. The straw hood cut the draught from the door, and for the first time since the boat she could hear herself breathe.

"Wann muss ich auschecken?", fragte Polly. Hier entscheidet die Fähre alles. Dann setzte sie sich in den Stuhl. Die Strohhaube schnitt den Zug von der Tür ab, und zum ersten Mal seit dem Schiff konnte sie sich atmen hören.
