The Mist Closes Behind Her

On her last afternoon, Polly flew high above the coast. Below her were the tea fields, the crater lakes, and the quiet forest. The island looked like old volcanoes, still slowly turning green.

Sa huli niyang hapon, lumipad si Polly nang mataas sa baybayin. Sa ilalim niya ay ang bukirin ng tsaa, ang mga lawa sa bunganga, at ang tahimik na gubat. Parang lumang bulkan ang pulo, dahan-dahang nagiging luntian.

Boats went back to the harbor. Lights came on along the coast. Smoke smell drifted up from the shore.

Bumalik ang mga bangka sa daungan. Nagsindi ang mga ilaw sa baybayin. Umangat ang amoy ng usok mula sa dalampasigan.

Fog came in from the sea. It covered the crater, then the tea fields, then the harbor. Polly had seen this before.

Dumating ang hamog mula sa dagat. Tinakpan nito ang bunganga, saka ang bukirin ng tsaa, saka ang daungan. Nakita na ito ni Polly noon.

She flew out over the water. Behind her, the island kept cooking dinner underground and growing tea. A small grey bird stayed safe in its forest.

Lumipad siya palabas sa tubig. Sa likuran niya, patuloy ang pulo sa pagluluto ng hapunan sa ilalim ng lupa at sa pagpapalago ng tsaa. Ligtas ang maliit na abuhing ibon sa gubat nito.
