This Blue Exists in One Place

You are standing on a beach of grey stones in the southwest of the Dominican Republic. There is almost no sand here. You turn the pebbles over with your foot, the way everybody does, and then one of them stops you. It is blue. Not painted, not glass. Blue the whole way through.

Stai pe o plajă de pietre cenușii în sud-vestul Republicii Dominicane. Aproape că nu există nisip aici. Întorci pietricelele cu piciorul, așa cum face toată lumea, și apoi una dintre ele te oprește. Este albastră. Nu vopsită, nu sticlă. Albastră până în adânc.

The stone is called larimar, and there is exactly one place on Earth where it comes out of the ground: a single hillside in the mountains above this coast. People have searched for a second one for fifty years and nobody has ever found it. The men who dig it out work with hand tools and buckets on ropes, because a machine would smash the very thing they came for.

Piatra se numește larimar, și există exact un loc pe Pământ de unde iese din pământ: un singur deal din munții de deasupra acestei coaste. Oamenii au căutat un al doilea loc timp de cincizeci de ani și nimeni nu l-a găsit vreodată. Bărbații care o scot lucrează cu unelte de mână și găleți legate de frânghii, pentru că o mașină ar sfărâma chiar lucrul pentru care au venit.

The name is not old. In nineteen seventy four a man called Miguel Méndez followed the blue pebbles up a river until he found where they were falling from, and he named the stone after his daughter Larissa and the Spanish word for the sea. If you ever buy one, look hard at the colour. The deeper the blue, the further down that hill somebody had to go.

Numele nu este vechi. În anul o mie nouă sute șaptezeci și patru, un bărbat pe nume Miguel Méndez a urmat pietricelele albastre pe un râu în sus până a găsit de unde cădeau, și a numit piatra după fiica lui, Larissa, și după cuvântul spaniol pentru mare. Dacă vreodată cumperi una, privește atent culoarea. Cu cât albastrul este mai adânc, cu atât mai jos în deal a trebuit cineva să coboare.
