This Blue Exists in One Place

You are standing on a beach of grey stones in the southwest of the Dominican Republic. There is almost no sand here. You turn the pebbles over with your foot, the way everybody does, and then one of them stops you. It is blue. Not painted, not glass. Blue the whole way through.

Στέκεσαι σε μια παραλία με γκρίζες πέτρες, στα νοτιοδυτικά της Δομινικανής Δημοκρατίας. Εδώ σχεδόν δεν υπάρχει άμμος. Γυρίζεις τα βότσαλα με το πόδι σου, όπως κάνουν όλοι, και τότε ένα από αυτά σε σταματάει. Είναι μπλε. Όχι βαμμένο, όχι γυαλί. Μπλε από πέρα ως πέρα.

The stone is called larimar, and there is exactly one place on Earth where it comes out of the ground: a single hillside in the mountains above this coast. People have searched for a second one for fifty years and nobody has ever found it. The men who dig it out work with hand tools and buckets on ropes, because a machine would smash the very thing they came for.

Η πέτρα λέγεται λαριμάρ, και υπάρχει ακριβώς ένα μέρος στη Γη όπου βγαίνει από το χώμα: μια μοναδική πλαγιά στα βουνά πάνω από αυτή την ακτή. Άνθρωποι έψαχναν για μια δεύτερη πηγή εδώ και πενήντα χρόνια, και κανείς δεν τη βρήκε ποτέ. Οι άντρες που την ξεθάβουν δουλεύουν με χειρωνακτικά εργαλεία και κουβάδες δεμένους σε σχοινιά, γιατί ένα μηχάνημα θα κατέστρεφε ακριβώς αυτό που ήρθαν να βρουν.

The name is not old. In nineteen seventy four a man called Miguel Méndez followed the blue pebbles up a river until he found where they were falling from, and he named the stone after his daughter Larissa and the Spanish word for the sea. If you ever buy one, look hard at the colour. The deeper the blue, the further down that hill somebody had to go.

Το όνομα δεν είναι παλιό. Το χίλια εννιακόσια εβδομήντα τέσσερα, ένας άντρας ονόματι Μιγκέλ Μέντεζ ακολούθησε τα μπλε βοτσαλάκια πάνω σε ένα ποτάμι μέχρι να βρει από πού έπεφταν, και ονόμασε την πέτρα από την κόρη του Λαρίσα και την ισπανική λέξη για τη θάλασσα. Αν αγοράσεις ποτέ ένα, κοίτα προσεκτικά το χρώμα. Όσο πιο βαθύ το μπλε, τόσο πιο βαθιά μέσα στο βουνό χρειάστηκε να κατέβει κάποιος.
