Near a small lake, Polly saw big pots next to deep holes. A cook put a pot into each hole with a rope. Polly watched.

Each pot had meat and vegetables inside. The ground under it is hot from the volcano. There is no fire. Only the earth's heat cooks the food.

The pots stay in the ground for six or seven hours. People go for a walk while they wait. Then they come back for dinner.

Steam came out when the first pot opened. It smelled very good. Polly watched the cook carry it away happily.
