The Low Wall

Polly flew over the desert in Arizona. She landed at the mouth of a big canyon. But the red walls here were small. They were as tall as the trees.

A raven sat in a tree. This canyon starts small, he said. Then it grows. Walk inside. The Navajo people call this place Tséyiʼ. It means inside the rock.

The canyon floor belongs to the Navajo Nation. About forty families live here. They grow food on the sand. People have lived here for more than four thousand years.

Polly looked down the canyon. The walls got taller and taller. She wanted to see the end. So she stayed for seven days.
