Polly Meets Someone

The morning Polly arrived on Oak Street, the whole neighborhood smelled of fresh bread. Polly left two suitcases by the green door and greeted the first neighbor in sight: an enormous bear watering her geraniums. "Hello! My name is Polly. I arrived this morning."

Le matin de l'arrivée de Polly rue des Chênes, tout le quartier sentait le pain frais. Polly a posé deux valises près de la porte verte et a salué la première voisine en vue : une ourse énorme qui arrosait ses géraniums. "Bonjour ! Je m'appelle Polly. J'ai emménagé ce matin."

The bear wiped her paws on her apron and smiled. "I am Berta. I have lived here for twenty years." They talked for a good while by the fence: where Polly came from, what Polly did for a living, and why this street of all streets. "I teach languages," Polly explained. "I work from home, so we are going to see a lot of each other."

L'ourse a essuyé ses pattes sur son tablier et a souri. "Moi, c'est Berta. J'habite ici depuis vingt ans." La conversation a duré un bon moment près de la clôture : d'où venait Polly, quel métier Polly faisait, et pourquoi cette rue-là plutôt qu'une autre. "J'enseigne les langues", a expliqué Polly. "Je travaille à la maison, alors on va beaucoup se voir."

When the sun was high, Berta pointed at the square at the end of the street. "There is a market tomorrow. If you want, I will show you where I buy my fruit." Polly accepted right away. "Nice to meet you, Berta. See you later!" And stepping into the new house, Polly thought that learning the neighbors' names was going to be the best possible start.

Quand le soleil est monté haut dans le ciel, Berta a montré la place au bout de la rue. "Demain, il y a marché. Si tu veux, je te montre où j'achète mes fruits." Polly a accepté tout de suite. "Quel plaisir de te connaître, Berta. À bientôt !" Et en entrant dans la maison neuve, Polly s'est dit que retenir le nom des voisins allait être la meilleure manière de commencer.
