Dentro la grotta, l'acqua fresca esce dalla roccia. Polly la assaggia. È fredda e dolce. Il mare è proprio lì, ma quest'acqua non è salata.

La pioggia cade sulla terra in alto. La roccia lassù è calcare. L'acqua entra dentro di essa. Viaggia giù dentro la pietra ed esce qui.

Ora Polly capisce i gradini. I soldati non li hanno fatti in una notte. I monaci li hanno fatti, piano piano, per molti anni. Volevano quest'acqua.
