Number Forty-Seven

Carla had cut her hand washing the dishes. It wasn't deep, but it kept bleeding, so she went to the clinic. The receptionist asked for her insurance card and gave her a number. Forty-seven.

Carla tinha-se cortado na mão a lavar a loiça. Não era profundo, mas continuava a sangrar, por isso foi ao centro de saúde. A rececionista pediu-lhe o cartão de utente e deu-lhe um número. Quarenta e sete.

The screen above the door said "Now serving: 31." The waiting room was full. A man was reading the same page of a magazine for ten minutes. A young father was holding a sleeping baby. A teenager was staring at his phone.

O ecrã por cima da porta dizia «A atender: 31». A sala de espera estava cheia. Um homem estava há dez minutos a ler a mesma página de uma revista. Um pai jovem segurava um bebé adormecido. Um adolescente olhava fixamente para o telemóvel.

Carla sat down and watched the numbers change. 32. 33. 36. The numbers did not move in order. She wondered if she had been forgotten.

Carla sentou-se e observou os números a mudar. 32. 33. 36. Os números não avançavam pela ordem. Pensou se se teriam esquecido dela.

After an hour, the screen finally showed 47. She walked through the door to the small office. The doctor looked at her hand for two minutes. "It's nothing," he said. "Clean it twice a day. No stitches."

Ao fim de uma hora, o ecrã mostrou finalmente o 47. Passou pela porta para o pequeno consultório. O médico olhou para a mão dela durante dois minutos. — Não é nada — disse. — Limpe duas vezes por dia. Sem pontos.

When she left, the waiting room was almost empty. The teenager was gone. The baby was awake. The man had finally turned the page.

Quando saiu, a sala de espera estava quase vazia. O adolescente tinha-se ido embora. O bebé estava acordado. O homem tinha finalmente virado a página.
