The Internet Is Underwater

The internet lives underwater. Send this to anyone who still says everything is in the cloud. Nearly every message that crosses an ocean does not fly anywhere. It travels along cables lying on the sea floor, in the cold and the dark, beside fish and crabs.

Internetul trăiește sub apă. Trimite asta oricui încă mai spune că totul este în cloud. Aproape fiecare mesaj care traversează un ocean nu zboară nicăieri. Călătorește prin cabluri așezate pe fundul mării, în frig și întuneric, alături de pești și crabi.

The cables are thinner than people expect. Far out in deep water, where almost nothing can reach them, some are no thicker than a garden hose. Inside are hairs of glass, and light runs along that glass carrying photos, calls, films and every word you send to another continent.

Cablurile sunt mai subțiri decât se așteaptă oamenii. Departe, în apele adânci, unde aproape nimic nu poate ajunge, unele nu sunt mai groase decât un furtun de grădină. Înăuntru sunt fire de sticlă subțiri ca un fir de păr, iar lumina călătorește de-a lungul acelei sticle purtând fotografii, apeluri, filme și fiecare cuvânt pe care îl trimiți către alt continent.

Things break them. Not sharks, although a shark did chew one once and the story has never died. Mostly it is fishing gear and heavy anchors dragging along the bottom. It happens more than a hundred times a year, somewhere in the world. Then a ship sails out, finds the broken line, lifts it up from the sea floor, joins the glass back together and lowers it down again. The cloud, it turns out, gets seasick.

Ceva le rupe. Nu rechinii, deși un rechin chiar a mușcat unul odată și povestea nu a murit niciodată. De cele mai multe ori sunt uneltele de pescuit și ancorele grele care se târăsc pe fund. Se întâmplă de peste o sută de ori pe an, undeva în lume. Apoi o navă pornește pe mare, găsește linia ruptă, o ridică de pe fundul mării, unește sticla la loc și o coboară din nou. Se pare că norul are rău de mare.
