Nobody Agrees

Further down, somebody else is on the steps. A fox comes up from below. She has a ruler and a notebook. She stops at every step and measures it. Polly moves to one side.

Alempana joku muu on portailla. Kettu tulee ylös alhaalta. Hänellä on viivoitin ja muistikirja. Hän pysähtyy joka portaalla ja mittaa sen. Polly siirtyy sivuun.

People cut these steps by hand. No two steps are the same. Some are high. Some are very low.

Ihmiset tekivät nämä portaat käsin. Yksikään porras ei ole samanlainen. Osa on korkeita. Osa on hyvin matalia.

Here is the funny part. Nobody knows how many steps there are. One office says one hundred and eighty seven. Another office says one hundred and eighty nine. Both are official.

Tässä on hauska osa. Kukaan ei tiedä, montako porrasta on. Yksi toimisto sanoo sata kahdeksankymmentäseitsemän. Toinen toimisto sanoo sata kahdeksankymmentäyhdeksän. Molemmat ovat virallisia.

Polly looks down the long line of stone. She decides to believe the bigger number.

Polly katsoo alas pitkää kiviriviä. Hän päättää uskoa suurempaa lukua.
