Nobody Agrees

Further down, somebody else is on the steps. A fox comes up from below. She has a ruler and a notebook. She stops at every step and measures it. Polly moves to one side.

People cut these steps by hand. No two steps are the same. Some are high. Some are very low.

Here is the funny part. Nobody knows how many steps there are. One office says one hundred and eighty seven. Another office says one hundred and eighty nine. Both are official.

Polly looks down the long line of stone. She decides to believe the bigger number.
