The Cliff That Leans Over You

Polly goes further down. Then she notices something strange. There is less sky than before. She looks up. The cliff hangs out over her head. It is wider up there than down here. The town at the top is out of sight now.

The sea did this, slowly, over a very long time. Waves hit the bottom of the cliff and take the rock away. Then the rock above has nothing to stand on. Along this coast the sea has made big caves in the cliffs. When a wave goes into a cave, Polly feels the sound through the stone under her feet.

On the ledges below her there are dark green birds. They stand with their wings wide open to dry them in the wind. These birds are shags. Almost half of all the shags in the whole Mediterranean Sea nest along this coast and on the small islands out there.

Suddenly one of them drops off its ledge. It falls into the water and makes almost no splash. Polly waits. The bird stays under a long time. When it comes up again it is far away, and it has a fish.
