The Old Story

Up close Polly looks at the steps again. They are very steep, almost like a ladder. Every step is a little different. She hops down the first few.

There is an old story about the steps. People say that soldiers came to attack the town long ago. They say the soldiers cut all the steps in one night.

It is a good story. But it is probably not true. You cannot cut two hundred steps into hard rock in one night. And there were guards here. They would see the work.

Polly sits down on a step. A big seabird flies past below her. It flies very low over the water. It does not move its wings.
