The Town on the Cliff

Polly flies south along the coast of Corsica. Then the island ends. In front of her there is only sea. Far away she can see another island.

Polly turns and sees a town. The town stands on a high white cliff. The houses are tall and narrow. They stand right at the edge. Below them the cliff falls a long way down to the sea.

Polly lands on the old town wall and looks down. The rock is white and dry. Gulls fly below her. Then she sees something strange. There is a narrow line cut into the cliff. Inside the line there are steps.

The steps go down into the dark. Polly cannot see the end of them. Polly will go down there.
