The Shepherd at the Gate

Polly gets up very early. Berta wants to show her something special. They sit on the wall above the old gate and wait. Then Polly hears many small bells. A flock of sheep comes around the corner and pours through the narrow gate.

Polly ustaje vrlo rano. Berta joj želi pokazati nešto posebno. Sjede na zidu iznad starih vrata i čekaju. Tada Polly čuje mnogo malih zvona. Stado ovaca dolazi iza ugla i prelijeva se kroz uska vrata.

Behind the sheep walks a shepherd with a wooden stick and a straw hat. Next to him walks a very big white dog, a mastiff. The dog looks calm and serious. The sheep know the way. They have walked here every morning for many years.

Iza ovaca hoda pastir s drvenim štapom i slamnatim šeširom. Pokraj njega hoda vrlo velik bijeli pas, mastif. Pas izgleda mirno i ozbiljno. Ovce znaju put. Hodaju ovuda svako jutro već mnogo godina.

Polly flies down and asks if she can come too. The big dog thinks about it. Then he gives a small nod. Together they all walk up the mountain, past the last houses, to the high green meadows above the gorge.

Polly sleti dolje i pita smije li i ona ići. Veliki pas razmisli. Zatim lagano kimne. Zajedno svi hodaju uz planinu, pokraj posljednjih kuća, do visokih zelenih livada iznad klanca.

They stay there all day. The sheep eat grass. The dog sleeps with one eye open. In the evening they all walk home. Polly rides on the back of the first sheep. For a little while, she is part of the flock.

Ostaju tamo cijeli dan. Ovce jedu travu. Pas spava s jednim okom otvorenim. Navečer svi hodaju kući. Polly jaše na leđima prve ovce. Nakratko je i ona dio stada.
