The Shepherd at the Gate

Polly gets up very early. Berta wants to show her something special. They sit on the wall above the old gate and wait. Then Polly hears many small bells. A flock of sheep comes around the corner and pours through the narrow gate.

Behind the sheep walks a shepherd with a wooden stick and a straw hat. Next to him walks a very big white dog, a mastiff. The dog looks calm and serious. The sheep know the way. They have walked here every morning for many years.

Polly flies down and asks if she can come too. The big dog thinks about it. Then he gives a small nod. Together they all walk up the mountain, past the last houses, to the high green meadows above the gorge.

They stay there all day. The sheep eat grass. The dog sleeps with one eye open. In the evening they all walk home. Polly rides on the back of the first sheep. For a little while, she is part of the flock.
