Water in the Desert

Polly settled down beside the little water channel and gave it her full attention. It deserved an explanation. Who takes a wall of solid rock and carves a river into it?

Polly se acomodó junto al pequeño canal de agua y le prestó toda su atención. Merecía una explicación. ¿Quién toma una pared de roca sólida y esculpe un río en ella?

The Nabataeans, as it turns out: the desert people who built the hidden city. They chiselled this channel through the entire length of the canyon so that spring water could travel, cool and obedient, all the way to their doorsteps. In a land that sees almost no rain, they made themselves the undisputed masters of water.

Resulta que los nabateos: el pueblo del desierto que construyó la ciudad oculta. Tallaron este canal a lo largo de todo el cañón para que el agua de manantial pudiera viajar, fresca y obediente, hasta la puerta de sus casas. En una tierra que casi no ve lluvia, se convirtieron en los indiscutibles maestros del agua.

And wherever their water once flowed, life keeps its side of the bargain. In a bend of the canyon Polly came upon an oleander bush, defiantly green and crowded with pink flowers.

Y dondequiera que su agua alguna vez fluyó, la vida cumple su parte del trato. En un recodo del cañón, Polly se encontró con un arbusto de adelfa, desafiante y verde, lleno de flores rosadas.

That night she tucked herself into one of the little carved doorways. Far above, the ribbon of sky silted up with stars, more of them than the narrow gap seemed able to hold. Tomorrow, she knew, she would reach the end of the crack.

Esa noche, se acurrucó en una de las pequeñas puertas talladas. Muy arriba, la cinta del cielo se llenaba de estrellas, más de las que el estrecho espacio parecía capaz de sostener. Mañana, sabía, llegaría al final de la grieta.
