The Elephant Mountain

Polly arrived at dawn, flying low over a calm blue sea. Ahead of her, a long mountain rose straight out of the water, and from this side it looked just like a sleeping elephant. The people of the coast call it Montgó. Polly, a small parrot with a red head, a green body and little round glasses, flew straight towards it.

Polly kam bei Morgengrauen an und flog tief über ein ruhiges, blaues Meer. Vor ihr erhob sich ein langer Berg direkt aus dem Wasser, und von dieser Seite aus sah er genau wie ein schlafender Elefant aus. Die Menschen an der Küste nennen ihn Montgó. Polly, ein kleiner Papagei mit rotem Kopf, grünem Körper und einer kleinen runden Brille, flog geradewegs darauf zu.

At the foot of the mountain lay a small white town with narrow streets, terracotta roofs and a quiet fishing port. The town is called Xàbia, and it rests on the plain between the mountain and the sea.

Am Fuß des Berges lag eine kleine, weiße Stadt mit engen Gassen, Terrakottadächern und einem ruhigen Fischerhafen. Die Stadt heißt Xàbia und liegt in der Ebene zwischen dem Berg und dem Meer.

Polly landed high on the ridge, on rock that was still warm from the day before. The stone was the colour of honey. From up there she could see the whole coastline stretched out below her.

Polly landete hoch oben auf dem Grat, auf einem Felsen, der noch warm vom Vortag war. Der Stein hatte die Farbe von Honig. Von dort oben konnte sie die ganze Küste unter sich ausgebreitet sehen.

Slowly the sun climbed out of the water, and its light turned the mountain and the town gold. Polly breathed in the salty air and made a decision. She would stay here for seven days.

Langsam stieg die Sonne aus dem Wasser empor, und ihr Licht verwandelte den Berg und die Stadt in Gold. Polly atmete die salzige Luft ein und traf eine Entscheidung. Sie würde sieben Tage hierbleiben.
