Hunters of the Sky

Polly worked her way up to the brink of the mountain, where the rock simply stops and the sea begins several hundred dizzying metres below. From that height the waves were reduced to faint white stitching on blue cloth.

Polly fue subiendo hasta el mismo borde de la montaña, allí donde la roca sencillamente se acaba y el mar empieza varios cientos de metros de vértigo más abajo. Desde esa altura las olas quedaban reducidas a un fino cosido blanco sobre tela azul.

Warm air streamed up the face of the cliff in an invisible river. Polly spread her wings and the updraft took her at once, lifting her as effortlessly as if the mountain itself had exhaled.

El aire cálido subía por la pared del acantilado como un río invisible. Polly extendió las alas y la corriente la tomó al instante, alzándola sin esfuerzo, como si la propia montaña hubiera exhalado.

An eagle slid into place beside her, white-bellied and utterly unhurried. It never once beat its wings; it simply leaned on the wind and let the cliff carry it, a hunter so at home in the air that flying looked like standing still.

Un águila se deslizó hasta colocarse a su lado, de vientre blanco y sin ninguna prisa. No batió las alas ni una vez; simplemente se apoyaba en el viento y dejaba que el acantilado la llevara, una cazadora tan cómoda en el aire que volar parecía estarse quieta.

Then a falcon came down past her like a dropped blade, cutting the air apart. Polly laughed into the wind and let it sweep her higher, one more hunter of the sky for a morning.

Entonces un halcón bajó junto a ella como una hoja de cuchillo soltada desde lo alto, cortando el aire en dos. Polly se rio contra el viento y dejó que la subiera aún más: por una mañana, una cazadora más del cielo.
