The Earth Breathes

Polly woke to a smell like breakfast eggs, though there was no kitchen for many kilometres. The smell was sulphur, and it rose from a field of bubbling pools and hissing cracks in the ground. Pale blue water simmered in stone bowls, far too hot to touch. Polly walked carefully between them on her thin legs, her blue-teal wings folded tight and her round black-rim glasses already misting in the steam.

Polly se despertó con un olor a huevos fritos, aunque no había ninguna cocina en kilómetros a la redonda. Era azufre, y ascendía desde un campo sembrado de pozas burbujeantes y grietas en la tierra que silbaban como serpientes dormidas. Un agua de color azul pálido hervía a fuego lento en cuencos de piedra, demasiado caliente como para acercarse siquiera. Polly caminó con cuidado entre ellas sobre sus piernas delgadas, con las alas azul verdoso bien plegadas y las gafas de montura negra ya empañadas por el vapor.

In the middle of the field stood a geyser that performs all day. Every few minutes the water swelled into a smooth blue dome, held its breath, and then burst upward in a tall white column with a deep thud. Polly learned the secret quickly. Water sinks down through the rock until it touches stone heated by the fire below, grows hotter than boiling, and finally flashes into steam that throws everything above it into the sky. She timed it, flew up through the warm spray, and came down laughing.

En el centro del campo se alzaba un géiser que actuaba durante todo el día como si fuera un espectáculo programado. Cada pocos minutos, el agua se hinchaba formando una cúpula azul y tersa, contenía el aliento un instante, y luego estallaba hacia arriba en una columna blanca y rugiente con un golpe sordo que se sentía en los huesos. Polly no tardó en descubrir el secreto: el agua se filtra por las rocas hasta rozar la piedra calentada por el fuego que arde en las profundidades, se calienta más allá de cualquier punto de ebullición y, de repente, se convierte en vapor que lanza todo lo que tiene encima hacia el cielo. Lo cronometró, se lanzó a volar a través del rocío tibio y aterrizó muerta de risa.

The people here have made friends with all this heat. In most of the towns, the hot water that warms the houses comes straight out of the ground, not from any furnace. Greenhouses heated by the earth grow tomatoes, cucumbers, even bananas, in a country that almost touches the frozen north. Very little is wasted, and the planet does most of the work.

Los habitantes de esta tierra han aprendido a vivir en buena armonía con todo ese calor. En la mayoría de los pueblos, el agua caliente que calienta las casas sale directamente del suelo, sin necesidad de ninguna caldera. Invernaderos alimentados por el calor de la tierra producen tomates, pepinos e incluso plátanos en un país que casi roza el norte helado. Aquí se desperdicia muy poco, porque es el propio planeta el que hace la mayor parte del trabajo.

By evening Polly found a quiet stream where hot water from the hills met cold water from the snow, mixing to something perfect and warm. She floated on her back, steam curling around her, and watched the first faint stars appear. The earth hummed gently beneath her, never quite still.

Al caer la tarde, Polly encontró un arroyo tranquilo donde el agua caliente que bajaba de las colinas se encontraba con el agua fría del deshielo, mezclándose hasta alcanzar una temperatura perfecta y acogedora. Se tumbó boca arriba dejándose llevar por la corriente, con el vapor rizándose a su alrededor como volutas de humo, y observó cómo aparecían las primeras estrellas tímidas en el cielo. Bajo ella, la tierra zumbaba suavemente, inquieta, viva, como si nunca terminara de dormirse del todo.
