The Seam of the World

Polly came down from a low grey sky and found a country that looked brand new. There were no soft green hills, only black rock, bright moss, and thin lines of steam rising from the ground, as if the earth was breathing. Her red head, green body, and small round glasses were the most colourful things for kilometres. This was Iceland.

Polly kam aus einem tiefen grauen Himmel herab und landete in einem Land, das wie neu aussah. Keine sanften grünen Hügel - nur schwarzes Gestein, leuchtend grünes Moos und dünne Dampffäden, die aus dem Boden stiegen, als würde die Erde atmen. Pollys roter Kopf, ihr grüner Körper und ihre kleinen runden Brillengläser waren die buntesten Dinge weit und breit. Das hier war Island.

The whole island is here by accident, a happy one. Iceland sits on top of a giant crack in the floor of the ocean. Here, two of the great plates that carry the world are slowly pulling apart. The island also sits over a hot spot, where heat rises from deep inside the planet. Fire below, cold sea around. That is the secret of this place.

Die ganze Insel existiert durch einen glücklichen Zufall. Island liegt auf einem riesigen Riss im Meeresboden. Hier ziehen zwei der großen Platten, die die Erdkruste tragen, langsam auseinander. Außerdem liegt die Insel über einem sogenannten Hotspot - einer Stelle, an der Hitze aus dem Inneren der Erde aufsteigt. Feuer darunter, kaltes Meer ringsum. Das ist das Geheimnis dieses Ortes.

Polly flew to a long valley where you can see the crack. It is a deep green canyon with tall rock walls. One wall belongs to North America. The other wall belongs to Europe. Polly hopped from one side to the other and crossed between two continents in one afternoon. The gap grows a little wider every year.

Polly flog zu einem langen Tal, wo man den Riss mit eigenen Augen sehen kann. Es ist eine tiefe grüne Schlucht mit hohen Felswänden. Eine Wand gehört zu Nordamerika, die andere zu Europa. Polly hüpfte von einer Seite zur anderen und überquerte so zwei Kontinente an einem einzigen Nachmittag. Der Spalt wird jedes Jahr ein kleines Stück breiter.

By evening the steam turned soft pink. Long ago, people met in this valley to make their laws. Polly found a mossy ledge and rested. She listened to the ground settle below her. Here, the land is never quite finished.

Am Abend färbte sich der Dampf zartrosa. Vor langer Zeit kamen Menschen in diesem Tal zusammen, um ihre Gesetze zu beschließen. Polly fand einen moosbedeckten Felsvorsprung und ruhte sich aus. Sie lauschte, wie sich der Boden unter ihr setzte. Hier ist das Land niemals ganz fertig.
